		The artist who originated the Big Swim's mermaid form is sculptor Kevin Palmer, of Sweet Gum Studios. from his interview in the Beaufort Gazette: "The mermaids will surely be noticed for their unique designs created by local artists and community members, but underneath all that is the fiberglass form carefully molded by the man behind the mermaids, Ridgeland artist Kevin Palmer. To remain "the man behind the mermaids" would be fine for Palmer. "I suppose the exposure is nice. We'll see in the long run," said Palmer, "but I've kind of been reveling in my obscurity and like it. "I think people leaving a mark on society is a bit overrated. I hope I don't leave too much of a mark. I prefer to harmonize with my surroundings." read more...
