What did you think of mermaids before the Big Swim?
I love mermaids.  They are part of that creative mysterious world that I dream about.

How'd you feel when you first read or heard about the opportunity to design a mermaid?
Hmmmm...I heard about the opportunity and entered my design within one week.  I was very excited to get involved in designing a creation for something that could be so expressive and enjoyable.

Why is it important to you to invest time, money and materials into a  piece of public art? How much of a legacy do you consider the Big Swim to be? Where will your mermaid be in twenty years?
Such a deep question for such a fun project.  I haven't looked that far ahead.  I do know that I can get many of the materials I am using for a reasonable, if not free, amount.  And really, how priceless is it to be able to delve into such a creative outlet?  Wow...twenty years, huh?  Well, I hope whoever wins my mermaid at auction enjoys it just as much as I did creating it.

What's the story behind your design? Who is your mermaid?
My mermaid kind of symbolizes how I feel about my little coffee breaks at different coffee houses throughout my life.  I've always enjoyed sipping specialty coffee drinks at comfortable coffee shops all over the U.S....either with friends, or just enjoying my peace during cherished solitude.  It can get you back into perspective, caught up with a friendship, or just give you a breather from the everyday stresses in life.  The caffeine usually gives me a nice rush, or spout of energy, thus representing the vibrant colors used.  I've always liked working with mixed media too.  I think it gives projects added dimension and character and lots to take in.

How do you hope people will react to your mermaid? What do you want them to take away from your design, from the Big Swim, from Beaufort?
I hope they just enjoy Perk-O-Lena and get a different perspective from each angle they view it.  And perhaps it will trigger some great memories that they have had...perhaps even one in Beaufort.  I hope they enjoy viewing all of Beaufort by visiting the many mermaid sites.
