The Sea Star Sisters
Once upon a time there were two “sea star” sisters who had journeyed together through many currents and waves. Over the course of their journeys they realized how important they were to each other. Each sea star offered the other support and encouragement whenever they found themselves in the murky depths of the sea, and they shared in each other’s peace and love when they were just hanging out on the sandy beaches.
One day while the sea stars were enjoying a beautiful sunshiny day on a soft sandy beach, they saw another sea star who was all alone. The lonely sea star was sad and hurt because she had broken one of her arms and wasn’t able to swim with the other sea stars. The sea star sisters knew that the lonely sea star’s arm would grow back and be okay, but should the lonely sea star have to deal with the sadness and pain all by her self? They went and befriended the lonely sea star and stayed with her until her arm grew back healthy and strong.
The lonely sea star didn’t feel lonely anymore - she wanted to do something to show the two sea star sisters how thankful she was to never feel lonely and broken and hurt again. Together all three decided to find a way to reach out to all of the sea stars in the sea to share their sisterhood.
Just then a friendly mermaid came floating by and waved “hello!” The sea stars had a wonderful idea! They waved back to the mermaid and asked her if she could carry them through the oceans of the world to join with the other sea stars and cast away feelings of sadness, loneliness and hurt. Honored, the mermaid led their swim around all of the big blue oceans and seas of the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Indian and the Artic. They listened to the many stories sea stars around the world had to tell. Together, they cast away the worries of other sea stars all throughout the world, by sharing in each others’ love and support while riding the mermaids tail until each of the sea stars felt strong enough to swim again on their own…Or, with a new friend.
Lizabee Rone Ciesar, one of the Sea Stars, is a therapist for abused children. She and her Sea Star, Jeni Rone, will be using the stories, pictures and feelings of the kids who visit Lizabee’s office to give to “Merry the Mermaid.” Lizabee and Jeni will help the children create Sea Stars that will cover the mermaid’s tail. This will help with the children’s recovery process as well as brighten the Beaufort County Children’s Park. The Sea Stars plan to use a decoupage technique along with glitter, glass, handmade paper and actual starfish to represent the Sea Stars and the stories of the children so Merry the Mermaid can carry them out to sea!
