Windy
by the kids at the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club,
sponsored by Carol Madeja

Windy has become a part of BYSC and the adults, as well as the kids, have embraced her and given her a place of honor. That is the beauty of public art.  it inspires those who might not usually consider art to have an appreciation of an original creation and embrace it as their own. The Windy project has given the children artists a presence in a setting where adults usually make the decisions about the grounds/decor/landscape. We used the things that represent the Club in her design; i.e., the regatta scene represents the sailing that takes place at the Club, the marsh scene shows the views we enjoy from the dock and our boats, the dolphin in her hair is our Club symbol, the nautical flags on her arms are the initials of everyone who helped to create her. She is wearing a pfd (personal flotation device) , and the Canadian maple leaf on her back is in honor of the summer camp 2006 sailing instructor who is from Canada. Her hair is a BYSC burghee  with Snowball the white dolphin (our mascot) who lived in the Beaufort river years and years ago,  and her face was done by one girl who thought she should be winking.
