The new & emerging artist initiative is offered with support from the Coastal
Communities Foundation’s Expansion Arts Program
The ACBC Get Your Art Out Emerging Artist Initiative reaches out to new artists who might also be: low income / rural / minority / disabled disadvantaged / underserved.

The Teaching Artist Institute is an opportunity for Beaufort County artists to share
their artform in the classroom. Artists are encouraged to contact the Arts Council of
Beaufort County now, at 379-ARTS, to learn sign-up for this training opportunity
that begins Saturday, February 2nd.
"Artists work in the schools as performers, artists-in-residence, workshop presenters,
and arts integration mentors," said JW Rone, Executive Director of the Arts Council of
Beaufort County. "The Teaching Artist Institute identifies and prepares artists for the
classroom experience, and the important South Carolina Artist Roster. When artists share
the process of their artform, they help academic achievement, develop new audiences, and
weave the arts in the to fabric of everyday life."
The Teaching Artist Institute is offered by the Arts Council of Beaufort County, the
Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, and the Beaufort County School District. These
Lowcountry organizations work together to improve arts-in-education through the
Kennedy Center Partners in Education program, based on the belief that educating
teachers is an essential component of any effort designed to increase the artistic
literacy of young people.
Saturday Feb 2nd - "Introduction to Becoming an Arts in Education Residency Artist &
Working as an Artist in Residence: What is Your Role?"
2 - 5pm, at the Arts Council of Beaufort County, 1111 Boundary St. Beaufort
presented by ACBC Staff & Melba Cooper, Beaufort County School District Teaching
Artist
Melba Cooper is a studio artist and a visual arts teaching artist. She taught studio
arts for twenty years in Beaufort County, and has established many approaches to painting,
bookmaking, and the inner critic. A new series of her work will form half of the
"Net Results" show at the Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, May 23-June 14, 2008.
Saturday Feb 16th - "Working as an Artist in Residence: Rewards & Challenges"
2 - 5pm, at the Arts Council of Beaufort County, 1111 Boundary St. Beaufort
presented by Kim Keats, Beaufort County School District Teaching Artist
Kim Keats is a fiber artist specializing in off-loom techniques and how weaving
links to humanity's prehistoric past. She has worked nationally as a teaching
artist for the past twenty years, and a new series of her work will form half of
the "Net Results" show at the Charles Street Gallery in Beaufort, May 23-June 14, 2008.

J.W. Rone has worked in arts education for over 35 years sharing his special brand of
creative dramatics with students across the US an foreign countries around the world.
Thursday May 15th & Friday May 16th - "Kennedy Center Partners in Education Seminar –
Artists as Educators: Planning Effective Residencies for Students"

presented by Sean Layne, Kennedy Center Trainer
- Sean Layne is the founder of Focus 5 Inc, a national arts education consulting company. He holds a B.F.A. degree in acting and studied acting in London, England. Sean leads residencies for students K-8, presents workshops for teachers, and has designed training seminars for teaching artists nationwide for The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He is also an Arts Coach for the Kennedy Center?s Changing Education Through the Arts program. For over a decade Sean acted, directed and designed sets for the Interact Story Theatre, a professional theatre company that has served more than 4,000 schools, museums, libraries, and festivals around the world. http://seanlayne.com/
Saturday May 31st - "Preparing & Completing Your Lesson Plans"
2 - 5pm, ACBC presented by Lisa Annelouise Rentz, Beaufort County School District Teaching Artist
Lisa Annelouise Rentz is the editor of the Arts Council of Beaufort County's
award-winning magazine ArtNews, and the instigator of Iodine Literary Projects. She
has worked as a teaching artist in Beaufort County for five years. Her writing has been
published by Paysan sans Peur press, Skirt, Salon.com, Noshi Knitting, Teaching Artist
Journal, broadcast on Boston Public Radio, and included in USC-B's permanent collection.

Developing Your Artist Portfolio: Digital Photography
presented by photographer M.A. Mueller & Deanna Bowdish. M.A. Mueller is a new & emerging
photographer in Beaufort County who recently became the Beaufort County photographer
for SKIRT! magazine. M.A. and gallery owner/ACBC President, Deanna Bowdish, will cover
the basics of photographing your work from resolution to lighting to photo composition.

Developing Your Artist Portfolio: Artist Statement
presented by Deanna Bowdish & Lisa Annelouise Rentz. ACBC staff and board president
join forces to help you write the perfect artist statement to accompany your work. Artist
Statements are essential for gallery owners and highly desired by potential purchasers. A well
written statement can make the sale!
