ACBC History

Since its founding in 1991, the Arts Council has served the cultural communities of Beaufort County. The ACBC maintains an ongoing dialogue with community members, artists, schools, and businesses to keep its programming fresh and pertinent to the needs of County with vibrant programs, innovative ideas, and extensive constituent services. We are still a small but growing organization, with a professional staff, a strong volunteer board, and several hundred annual members.

Unique, innovative and responsive programming has become the trademark of the Arts Council, and has brought statewide and regional recognition to our community. The organization listens closely to its membership and to the community at-large, and places a great value on member comments, constituent suggestions, and audience advice.

Close networking with regional and statewide arts leaders and cultural organizations, and a strong relationship with the South Carolina Arts Commission, has helped guide our organization from the beginning. By working together, this has helped the Arts Council become one of South Carolina's most active and best-known local organizations. In 1999—after less than ten years of service to the community—the Arts Council of Beaufort County was honored with the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award as South Carolina's most outstanding arts organization. This incredible honor—a reflection of the ongoing vision created by founders, constituents, board, and staff—was presented at the State House by Governor Jim Hodges on May 5, 1999.

As the Arts Council enters its second decade as a pioneering arts organization, we thank the artists, educators, members, supporters, and community leaders who have given us the strength and character to achieve all of our success.
